Certis Europe’s developing partnership with Nichino Europe in Italy

Cooperation between Certis Europe and Nichino Europe has seen the development of pyraflufen-ethyl...

Cooperation between Certis Europe and Nichino Europe has seen the development of pyraflufen-ethyl in a 2.5% EC formulation for the control of grapevine shoots and fruit tree suckers, as a total herbicide for grapes and fruit trees and as a potato desiccant.

Pyraflufen-ethyl, from the phenylpirazole family (already listed in Annex 1), is a contact herbicide and desiccant. The product acts by inhibiting the enzyme PPO (Protoporphyrinogen oxidase), which is essential in the biosynthesis of chlorophyll. It has low solubility and no volatility, thus making it non-residual in soil with good selectivity towards cultivated plants.

The results of the 2008-2010 trials, in a joint development program with Sipcam have proved the efficacy of pyraflufen-ethyl in controlling grapevine shoots and fruit tree suckers successfully, demonstrating both speed of action and duration of effect. The data collected has shown better performance than the market standard, gluphosinate ammonium, and, in particular, rapid action and flexibility of application timing. In addition, pyraflufen-ethyl has proved to have good efficacy against broad-leaved weeds present in vineyards and fruit orchards. In addition, the product has shown very good result in use as a potato dessicant.

The collected data on grape and fruits were presented at the national Giornate Fitopatologiche 2010 and a new update on potato will be presented during the Giornate Fitopatologiche 2012, an important technical venue for the industry to present new pesticides for the domestic market.
The product will be launched by Certis in spring 2012 with the brand Piramax. This new product fits with Certis Europe’s objectives and strategy for future growth. Alongside other new products currently in development, pyraflufen-ethyl will play its part in strengthening the Certis portfolio in the grapevine and fruit market.

New acaricide from Certis Netherlands

A newly authorised acaricide, Scelta ®, made by the Japanese company Otsuka, was successfully...

A newly authorised acaricide, Scelta ®, made by the Japanese company Otsuka, was successfully launched last year into the Dutch ornamentals market.
The product is based on the active ingredient cyflumetofen, from a new chemical group that has not previously been used for ornamentals. Scelta provides mite control for all outdoor and protected ornamental crops and controls all stages of the mite lifecycle: eggs, larvae and adults. It is a highly selective contact insecticide, compatible with biological controls and safe to the crop. This combination of properties differentiates Scelta from other acaricides and therefore makes it a welcome addition for growers.
Chrysanthemum grower, René Eikelenboom of Arcadia Chrysanten, had problems with spider mite pressure last summer on two production sites and found Scelta to be a successful and valuable solution, which controlled the pest very quickly. Producing 30 million stems of chrysanthemums per year on five different sites, Arcadia uses beneficial insects for spider mite control from March to September. However, it can be necessary, from time to time, to boost that control with the use of an acaricide, without killing the beneficial insects. It is also important to use a range of acaricides in order to avoid the development of resistance.
“Being able to use Scelta safely with beneficials offers a major advantage for us,” says René. “Even with a good system using beneficial insects we sometimes need extra help against spider mite and the number of beneficial-friendly acaricides available is very limited. We are delighted to have a new alternative and shall use Scelta with care to avoid the development of resistance for as long as possible,” he explains. “Coming from a new chemical group for ornamentals, it is certainly a valuable addition to our armoury for mite control and important for resistance management.”

Arkema and Certis have entered into an exclusive joint development and distribution agreement in...

Developed by Arkema’s R&D teams, Paladin ® is a new and effective soil fumigant based on dimethyldisulfide (DMDS), for worldwide substitution of old fumigants, which are being gradually withdrawn due to ozone depletion or regulatory restrictions. DMDS has already been registered as a soil fumigant in the USA and Israel in 2010, and in Morocco in 2011. Europe is another key target for registration of Paladin ®.
Under the agreement, Certis will be Arkema’s exclusive partner for the development, registration and distribution of Paladin ®in Europe. Arkema will initiate the EU approval process of DMDS by submitting a regulatory application by the end of 2012.
In the meantime, should Paladin® be authorized by way of derogation by national authorities on some European markets, Certis Europe and Arkema are ready to supply these specific needs. DMDS is produced by Arkema in its Lacq plant in South of France.

Certis Europe has been appointed distributor for Japica in Spain. The product will be included in the company’s crop protection product catalogue from next season. This appointment by Kumiai, a Certis Europe shareholder since early 2010, is further evidence of its support for the company in Spain, and provides the addition of this new speciality product to the Certis range of IPM compatible fungicides, which already includes Cercobin and Tusal.
Japica is formulated on a base of Mepanipyrim and registered by the Spanish Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs (registration number 23037). It is included in Annex 1 of the Directive 91/414 for the control of botrytis in strawberries, vines, aubergines and tomatoes.
The addition of Japica to the Certis Europe portfolio demonstrates the continuing growth of the company in Spain. It is Certis Europe’s aim to become a leading company in crop protection and to provide solutions that will help its customers develop their businesses. This is being achieved through carefully implemented strategies and goals that are fully endorsed by shareholders, Mitsui, Nisso, Chemtura and Kumiai.
